NEoN Literary

NEoN, is preparing for its literary event taking place in the Hannah Maclure Centre, the University of Abertay Dundee, on Saturday 16 October 2010. The public event comprises a full day of creative writing workshops for all ages delivered by author and English teacher, Zoe Venditozzi. The workshop sessions exploring NEoN’s curatorial theme of ‘character’ according to the literary world are set to stimulate and inspire the attendees.

“The children and young people’s workshops are really an opportunity to express and experiment artistically with words and language; a chance to do something imaginative, fun and crafty that they may not experience at school. The adult class gives space for folk to explore creative writing techniques, receiving handy hints and tips along the way! I am absolutely thrilled to be involved and cannot wait to meet each of the budding writers.” explained Venditozzi.

As a teacher and highly respected author whose works include, ‘Anywhere else but here’, Zoe Venditozzi’s background is firmly rooted in creative writing and the arts. Zoe Venditozzi holds a pivotal position within the literary community of Dundee, being involved in various exciting projects including Dundee’s Literary festival 2010 and her own cross disciplinary collaborative project, Those two dolls. Her passion for creative literary projects, together with the importance she places upon encouraging the local community to embrace literature and the arts will undoubtedly make the NEoN literary workshops a valuable event for anyone interested in creative writing.

The NEoN Literary event will hold three separate creative writing workshops delivered by Venditozzi over the course of the day, with attendees split into groups according to age:

The first workshop, Make (it) Yourself, is for children aged 5-11. Particpants will be encouraged to express their own personality and explore their own character through language and art. Under the expert guidance of Venditozzi, children will experiment with words, colour, collage, drawing and painting to create a ‘book about me’, drawing upon poetry, stories and imagery which inspire them. The workshop for children will take place between 10.30 a.m. – 11.30 a.m.

The second workshop, Make (it) Yourself, is for young people aged 12-16. Participants will be invited by Venditozzi to address the contemporary issue of identity, developing their own expression of their personal character through words and imagery to produce their own creative autobiographies using various artistic media. The workshop for young people will take place between 12 p.m. – 1p.m.

The third and final workshop is for adults aged 17 or over. This session is suited to everyone; from those beginning a creative writing career, to those who are revisiting an old past time, or those who are simply looking for an opportunity to express their personality and thoughts through creative writing. Venditozzi will encourage participants to draw upon their own skills and diverse backgrounds, while exploring different literary techniques to enhance writing skills in order to create and develop characters. A combination of visual prompts and games has been designed to stimulate discussion and facilitate an exploration of creative and practical ways to develop creative writing skills. The adult workshop will take place between 2p.m. – 4 p.m.
