Access 2021

Access Key Information

NEoN Digital Arts endeavours to make the festival as welcoming and easy to engage with as possible. If there is anything we can do to make your experience more enjoyable please don’t hesitate to get in touch at neon'at'northeastofnorth 'dot' com and we will try our best to help. You can also contact us via our contact form here.

All events in our programme have a clear ‘Access’ section that identifies any additional support systems that are in place.

We have designed an 'Access Key' as a useful navigational tool to help identify which projects you may be interested in.

Access Key

V - Highly Visual / Minimal or No Text

Projects with this tag will be highly visual and contain minimal or no text.

VT - Highly Visual / With Text

Projects with this tag will be highly visual and contain text. The text is currently not compatible with a screen reader.

S - Sound Based

Projects with this tag will be sound-based, either audio works best experienced online or predominantly text/sound-based performances that have minimal visuals.

CC - Captioned

Projects marked CC will have live, or pre-recorded captions in English. These captions will express all text spoken. For some of the events, the captions maybe be optional and instructions on how to turn on the captions will be clearly described on the individual show pages.

BSL - Interpreted

Events marked BSL will be interpreted by British Sign Language interpreters. On each event page, it will list whether the Interpretation is happening live, or filmed separately & edited in.

ML - Multilingual

Google Translate will also be available to translate text.

AD - Audio Description

Audio description, or AD, is a spoken track that runs alongside the main broadcast providing a blind or partially sighted person with a description of the visual things happening on screen. AD is used where there is no dialogue from the program during silent periods. It describes elements like facial expressions, movement, gestures, body language and activity. The voice used for AD is a real person.

AU - Audio Recording

Text will be available as a sound recording. There will be a recording of a real person reading the text and available as an audio file to listen to.

TTS - Text to Speech

Text-to-speech is a software feature that reads text and converts it into synthesized speech. Also includes screen reader compatibility.

Content Notes

We have included 'content notes' on the individual event pages. These will highlight if the project includes reference to or contains strong language, sexual references, nudity, violence, alcohol or substance addiction or any other scenes we think some viewers may find upsetting. We appreciate this list is not comprehensive and encourage you to confidentially get in touch if there is a particular subject matter not listed you wish to avoid.

We also recommend Ewan’s Guide. Euansguide.com is the disabled access review site where disabled people, their families, friends and carers can find and share reviews on the accessibility of venues around the UK and beyond. This site is an invaluable tool for everything from planning a day out, to picking a last-minute place for coffee or lunch.

The Covid-19 pandemic has created uncertainty and challenging times for individuals and organisations everywhere. We are working through these difficulties with the safety of our workforce, artists, participants, and audience, the forefront of our minds. Whilst enjoying our festival, your safety is paramount.
